Common Causes of External Blocked Drains
Any sort of blocked drain can prove to be inconvenient, make a mess and can be frustrating trying to clear.
External blocked drains can be a bigger problem, possibly affecting the drainage of a few sources from the home. All the usual bad practices that can result in blocked internal drains apply to external drains too but with some added factors.
Tree root systems can damage external pipes over time, breaking through them and causing blockages and / or leaking. If tree roots have caused damage to your drainage system you can call us for Drain Repairs
Damage to the drain itself from flooding, land subsidence and accidents can also cause blockages and will require a repair.
For stubborn blockages we can bring out the big guns and use our High Pressure Drain Jetting System and for any blockages that are difficult to diagnose we can do a CCTV Drain Survey of the area causing the issues, if conditions allow for this.

Preventing Future Drain Blockages
Whether from showering and having long hair come out or shaving your stubble over a sink, hair should never be disposed of down any drain. A buildup of hair further down the drainage system, with the hair coming from various places in the house, can result in a blockage in your external drains.
It can be too easy to simply brush some loose dirt down the drain in the garden or driveway, overtime this can cause a buildup of dirt resulting in a blockage. The area around any drain should be free of any materials that may come loose and blow into it.
Fat and Grease
Any leftover waste from cooking with oils and fats should be disposed of properly. Those in the catering trade may have old oil picked up, in your home you should be bottling up the used oil and disposing of in accordance with guidelines for your local authority. Such materials should never be disposed of down a drain or toilet.
Toilets are built to take tissue but even this should not be in excessive amounts. Other toiletry items may be made of similar materials to tissues such as cotton swabs, wet wipes and sanitary towels but should never be put down a drain. Such items down break down as much as tissue, resulting in a blockage. You can also call us out for Blocked Toilets
Twigs and Leaves
As with dirt, it’s best practice to keep any loose twigs or leaves away from any external drains you may have. Particularly in the autumn when the trees are shedding their leaves, such blockages can happen in a relatively short time.
Tree and Plant Roots
If you’re going to be planting any new additions to the garden be sure that they are a good distance from your underground drain pipes. Over the years plants and trees can grow at such a rate that their root systems damage your drainage pipes, causing leaks and blockages.
If you know or suspect your external drains are fine and the problem is indoors we can clear an Internal Blocked Drain too.
